Screen Shot 2014-12-06 at 11.12.28 PMDescription: This is a brochure mockup for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

It all started by deciding the size of the paper I wanted and how I wanted it to fold. I originally had an inner flap that would fold out after you open it, but I decided against it because it just added unnecessary busyness. Then I went to the sketchbook. I knew the layout of the brochure pretty quickly, I really like the idea of having images fill almost the entire brochure because the purpose is to showcase a beautiful national park.

Coming up with the logo was my biggest challenge. I wanted to do something with water and the forest since that’s pretty much all you see in the Boundary Waters. I really struggled to make a reflection with trees, but that also had some perspective, so I ended up doing individual trees rather than a tree line. It was tough, but a good struggle. I made a final sketch and brought it into Illustrator. I used the Image Trace tool to turn my sketch into workable paths. I didn’t have to tinker with the paths very much, and I just changed the color to what I wanted it to be.

I used Photoshop to edit the images. I actually didn’t need to play with them too much at all. The most I did was use the layer mask to create the montage effect on the back cover. I really like how that turned out.

I used InDesign to finalize the layout. The biggest challenge was placing the texts in place where they could comfortably wrap around the image. I actually placed a separate selection of the tree line to get the text to sit on top of the image and also wrap around the tree line. Not sure if that was the best solution, but it works.  My favorite part of the brochure is the three symbols on the offset portion.

Message: Learn about why the Boundary Waters are so awesome

Audience: All who have or have yet to explore this wonderful region

Top Thing Learned: Don’t procrastinate the biggest project of the semester…

Color scheme and color names: [kind of] Split Complimentary; Blue, Green, and Brown.

Project 7: Webpage

P7EthanGibletteScreenshot

  1. Description: A webpage dedicated to describing the process of creating the logo for “Summer Skin Apparel”
  2. Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): The logo was created a couple weeks ago in Adobe Illustrator. This webpage is html with a link to a css file. All of the text was put into the html file, and the colors, format, and layout were all edited in the css file. I think I adjusted the padding on each of the elements the most in order to align everything the way I wanted. The description was the touchiest because I want to more or less center it with the logo. I added a “border-top” and “border-bottom” to get the thin lines around “Take a look at the design process” header.
  3. Message: This is a simple webpage designed to describe the process of creating a logo.
  4. Audience: Potential employer or customer.
  5. Top Thing Learned: There are many different ways to accomplish the same thing in css
  6. Color scheme and color hex(s): Analogous Gold color scheme
  7. Title Font Families & Category: The Header and sub-header are both Raleway Medium
  8. Copy Font Families & Category: The body, including the description are also Raleway. The body being light weight and the description being bold.
  9. Changes made to the CSS: Changed the background color, removed the header background. Adjusted the padding on all elements. Added top and bottom borders to the sub-header. Changed the property of the description from <p> to <h5> in order to separate its formatting from the last line with the hyperlinks.
  10. Word Count: 440

  • Description: A Mockup stationery for the fictional company Summer Skin Apparel.
  • Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): Made exclusively in Adobe Illustrator. Before bringing my ideas into Ai though, I sketched quite a few ideas. Because the stationery is mostly comprised of the logo of the company, that’s what took the most time. The circle part of the image originally had some simple “rays” coming off, but I slowly eliminated them as I wanted to go of a very simple look. I designed the logo first, then designed the letter, then the front/back of the business card.
  • Message: This is potential stationery that would be used for the company Summer Skin Apparel.
  • Audience: The company focuses on summer/warm weather clothing for younger men.
  • Top Thing Learned: Keep the logo simple, but keep the layout of the stationery even simpler.
  • Color scheme and color names: A monochromatic scheme with three shades of “gold.”
  • Title Font Name & Category: Raleway Thin and Raleway Medium; Sans Serif
  • Copy Font Name & Category: Raleway ExtraLight, Sans Serif, and Futura Pt Book, Sans Serif

Project 5: Logos

P5-EthanGiblette

  1. Description: # separate logo designs for  semi-fictional clothing company called numonia. My brother used to crochet hats and he created the brand numonia. It was legitimate to the point where he sold his hats to a local clothing boutique. He no longer makes hats.
  2. Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): All were created in Adobe Illustrator. The top logo is simply two different fonts. For the  middle logo, I sketched the silhouette and hat based on my own silhouette, and brought it into Illustrator using the image trace tool. The bottom logo I used the same process. Drew the letter myself and used the image trace to bring them into Illustrator. To fill the traced images with color, I used the live paint bucket tool. It’s a little touchy, and made the stroke on the letters for the bottom logo difficult to deal with. But it fulfilled my purposes pretty well.
  3. Message: Three separate logos for a clothing company.
  4. Audience: The company specializes in winter clothing for men.
  5. Top Thing Learned: Keep it SIMPLE
  6. Three Color Scheme and Color Names: Top: analogous scheme using indigo, blue, and teal; middle: monochromatic using blue; bottom: complimentary using blue and orange
  7. Three sets of Title / Body Font Names & Categories: top: title is Akko Rounded Std Bold, subtitle is Azo Sans Thin; middle: title is  Foco Bold, subtitle is Foco Light; bottom: subtitle is Mostra Nuova Light
  8. Votes on favorite logo:
  9. Top Logo = 5; Middle Logo = 2; Bottom Logo = 3;
  10. My favorite logo is number 3.

Project 4: Montage

P4-EthanGiblette

  • Description: A Spiritual image conveyed through the use of a montage style of images
  • Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, Steps taken while designing): Used Flickr to gather the two images. Applied a Smudge Stick filter to the background image, and removed the filter with a clipping mask from everything below the horizon line. In order to achieve the effect on the man’s face, I put a clipping mask on the layer and brushed away the background and adjusted the opacity of the brush to get the gradual blend on the edges of his head. Made sure to keep the center of his face fully opaque. For the text, I used the Overlay blending mode and sampled colors from around the sun to achieve the brightness and color I wanted. The words “LIGHT” and “SHINE” have a drop shadow in order to help increase their contrast. I didn’t want the text to stand out too much, and I think the Overlay effect really helps that. The text feels much more integrated with the image as a whole.
  • Message: The message is to “let your light shine” by being happy letting it show.
  • Audience: Young adult males.
  • Top Thing Learned: How to properly use clipping masks.
  • Filter / Colorization used and where it was applied: Used the smudge stick filter on the background image, removed that with a clipping mask from the area below the horizon line. Used the overlay blending option and pulled the color for the text from the area immediately surrounding the sun.
  • Color scheme and color names: Analogous scheme using Brick, Orange, and Gold
  • Title Font Name & Category: Azo Sans Thin; Sans Serif
  • Copy Font Name & Category: No Copy

Project 3: Photodesign

P3EthanGiblette

  • Description: An original image which has been edited and used in a design emphasizing the photo.
  • Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): Went to Nature Park to take photo, tried at two different times to find optimum lighting. Brought photo into Adobe Photoshop and edited the brightness & contrast. Also increased the saturation by a lot and tweaked the hue slightly. Cropped out parts of the image I didn’t want and used the colored boxes to “cover” some elements of the image I didn’t want.
  • Message: Go to Nature Park, you can find peace and calm there.
  • Audience: Anyone having a stressful time and needs a break from life.
  • Top Thing Learned: It is much easier to take photo that already mostly looks how you want because the more editing done, the less real it looks. So Photoshop should be used to highlight parts of an image you want to emphasize, not to create new elements within an image.
  • Color scheme and color names: I chose an analogous scheme using green, lime and yellow.
  • Title Font Name & Category: Bree from Sans Serif
  • Copy Font Name & Category: Gill Sans Light from Sans Serif
  • Thumbnail of original, unedited image inserted

I thoroughly enjoyed this activity. A good exploration of different techniques, but not too much to cause any stress. I would say for each different example I tried two maybe three different setups, and probably took about 5 photos each to make sure I got a good one. It was a bit clunky to work with specific requirements on a non-SLR camera, but after getting used to it, not a big deal.

I think the most important part is the lighting. If you have good lighting, I’d say thats like more than half the battle. Always a pain to try and get a good shot with low light. It also matter quite a bit where you position yourself in conjunction with the light source; trying to get rid of unwanted shadows or glares. A small step to the left can make a big difference.

Project 2: Event Ad

P2EthanGiblette

Description: A mock Event Advertisment for a fundraiser put on by the Rexburg Straw Maze.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): The entire ad was designed on Microsoft Word. The background image is scanned from Landscape Architecture Magazine. The image’s saturation and contrast is slightly tweaked. The title font is called Mistral, which I chose because I feel the sharp, uneven edges match pretty well with the sharp edges of the grass in the background.

Message: The ad is saying there is a fundraiser being put on by the Straw Maze.

Audience: Families with young children, or anyone who is physically able to complete the maze and wants to donate to a charitable cause.

Color scheme and color names: I chose an Analagous Scheme, including Lime, Yellow, and Gold. I pulled the colors for the text and shapes from the image.

Top Thing Learned: That Microsoft Word is good for more than just word processing.

Title Font Name & Category: Mistral from the Script/Decorative Category

Copy Font Name & Category: Calibri from the Sans Serif Category

Scanned images used, sources, original sizes, location of scanner used: The image is scanned from an article found in Landscape Architecture Magazine. Original Size is 7″x10″ Scanned in the first floor of the McKay Library.

Project 1: Flier

IMG_0039

Description. A mock up flier for a conference on leadership for graduates.

Process. I began with four sketches, and this layout was the third I did. As soon as I put it on paper I pretty much knew it was the one I would move forward with. I digitized it with Adobe InDesign and after a few helpful critiques, simplified the design to what you see now.

Message. A conference for recent graduates to increase their leadership skills.

Audience. Target is 22-30 year olds who have graduated from a university or college.

Top Thing Learned. Break up large portions of text to make it less “stressful” to look at and read.

Title Font Name & Category. The title font is Magneta Bold and Book, which hails from the Oldstyle category of typefaces.

Copy Font Name & Category. The copy font is Proxima Nova Soft Regular and Bold. Hailing from the category Sans Serif.
